Tips to pay your mortgage down faster
- Switch to accelerated bi-weekly payments. You make the equivalent of one extra monthly payment each year.
- Use your prepayment privileges. Most mortgages let you make lump-sum payments or raise your regular payment each year, up to a limit that depends on your lender.
- Round up your payment. Even a small increase goes straight toward your principal.
- Revisit your amortization at renewal. It's a good time to shorten it or increase your payments.
